re-Imagining Yoga
EveryBody Breathe is an experiment inspired by the spirit of communal care and generosity. We believe yoga, and all of its many gifts, can be made more accessible to more people.
The work rests on
these four principles:
01 - We depend on the Community for support.
Strong communities are places of opportunity and growth for its members, and the strongest communities are those in which everyone is encouraged to contribute in some way.
The majority of programming is offered at no charge to participants. To fund our EveryBody Breathe community programs, we invite supporters and participants to contribute to their own level of comfort. Voluntary donations are used to develop, improve, and promote our offerings and to pay teachers a fair rate. We are committed to removing the financial barriers to participation.
02 - We use a trauma-informed lens on our work.
Trauma, which is a person’s emotional and physical response to a deeply disturbing experience, can rewire a person’s body and brain. For many, trauma is more than just a single experience—it is historic oppression and ongoing threats to one's safety and well-being. At EveryBody Breathe, we align with a trauma-informed focus because we recognize the pervasiveness of trauma and its impact on individuals and communities.
We are committed to providing equitable access to practices that focus on reconnection, recovery, resilience, and rest. We are also committed to providing a safe, welcoming, inclusive space for all
03 - We are a Learning Community.
Yoga can be a path, a tool, that invites us to learn, change, grow, discover—to open ourselves up to new possibilities. It provides mental, emotional, and spiritual strength and flexibility that can fuel our resilience when life overwhelms us.
There is an essential connection between yoga and social justice. The concept of justice is both a theoretical concept and a practical ideal that invites further reflection and learning and commitment to action. The roots of this are central in many of yoga’s foundational texts such as the Bhagavad Gita.
Understanding and taking action from an awareness of social location is central to our ways of working. EveryBody Breathe is a group of diverse humans all whom carry our own sets of identities through which we understand and engage with the world and with various degrees of privilege and adversity. And yet, we represent only a sliver of the human tapestry of beautiful difference. We are committed to continuing our learning and unlearning to be a community where Every Body feels welcome to participate.
04 - We are part of a bigger Movement.
EveryBody Breathe is part of a living ecosystem. From our roots at the Yoga Center of Columbia, we are reaching out to align our work with the ideas and ideals of many individuals and organizations who also see the connection between yoga and social justice. By naming and honoring the communities and organizations that inspire and motivate us, we invite reciprocity and accountability to the larger collective. We are excited to become part of the larger movement towards social justice, equity, and liberation.
